RITUALS OF THE FIRST YEAR TOUR

Summer 2008: Rituals of the First Year looks at a father’s experience during the first year of his daughter's life. These four dances chart the upheaval wrought by a first child.

“Leaving Home” represents birth. The dancers, ringed by a fabric egg, learn to use their bodies over time, relating mostly by touch. Gradually, they are able to take action and leave the egg. This dance also relates to various times in our lives in which we must exchange the comfortable for the unknown.

“Coming Unstuck” reveals the challenge of a parent to come to terms with life changes. In it, three dancers cling stubbornly to a wall and, also, to each other. Their relationships change in spite of their best efforts.

“Looking Over My Shoulder” is about dread of the dangers that may befall a child. A solo, it depicts a fly caught on a spider’s web. Thus are we caught by our fears, so that we narrow our range of experience. To be free, we must accept risk.

“Falling Behind” examines childhood. A girl is portrayed as she grows from an infant to a young adult. Her relationship with her family, and her attitude toward her own memories, undergo a rocky progression.

Rituals of the First Year ranges through the emotional palette delivered by a new baby, including adoration, fear, and surrender. The dancers document these emotions with new rituals: talking through touch, bonding and separating, carrying and falling. As they ride the waves of change, you are encouraged to reflect on your own experiences as a parent or child.
