Who am I in this dance? I...
Big Changes
We will miss Florencia! She has left the group for personal reasons.
I spent the last two rehearsals learning Florencia's role in "January Night." I had it in mind to hire a new dancer and teach it to her. I am having so much fun with the role, however, that I will keep it instead.
I find it extremely difficult to choreograph for myself. Video does not tell the whole story. Having others watch and give me notes helps, but I still feel frustrated because I can't see it. Learning someone else's role is a rare opportunity for me. I already know that I like the role, so I don't worry as much about the substance. The details are still a challenge, but I am satisfied with the heart of the work. I make small changes to the material, fitting it to my body.
I adore sledding across the ramp!
We still have to add material to the sledding and the sleepwalking, but the new section has begun to work on my mind. What is the substance of dreams? How do we embody the subconscious? How do we dream in winter as opposed to spring or summer?
My mind conjures up animal imagery: the hulking, prowling, hungry beast of winter. How do we create this with our three bodies? Birds enter into my mind as well: wings stretched, heart thumping in skeletal chest, feathers fanning. I'm not sure where this is going.
Human Landscape Dance and Anne-Marie Mulgrew and Dancers Co will perform in The Philadelphia/Washington DC Exchange May 29 at 7:30pm and May 30 at 3pm at the Painted Bride Arts Center, 230 Vine St in Philly. Come join us!
